DIY Air-Fried Samyang Buldak Fries

Looking for a little heat? Spice up your snack game with these delicious Samyang Buldak air-fried french fries!

Want to elevate your french fry eating experience? Indulge yourself with these air-fried spicy chicken ramen fries, aka buldak fries. These air-fried fries are crispy, crunchy, with just the right amount of spice and a fraction of the oil of a regular serving of french fries!

This recipe is inspired by The Nuclear Fire Noodle Fries from The Burwood Hotel in Sydney, Australia that have taken the internet by storm. If you’re unable to book a flight to Australia and try them in person, here’s how you can make something similar in the comfort of your own home.

Ingredients

French Fries Base:

  • Frozen Shoestring Fries→ For crispier, crunchier fries we recommend using shoestring fried potatoes. These frozen fries are cut thinner than your regular french fry.

  • Olive Oil → For this recipe, we used extra virgin olive oil as a healthier alternative to vegetable oil. Olive oil is packed with omega 3 so you can enjoy these fries at a fraction of the guilt.

  • Salt & Pepper → This adds extra flavour to the french fry base. We used pink Himalayan salt for this recipe, but any iodized salt will do.

Samyang Hot Spicy Chicken Ramen:

The Samyang Nuclear Fire Noodles, a.k.a Hek Buldak Bokkeummyun (핵 불닭 볶음면), are Korean instant noodles that are known as one of the spiciest instant ramens in the world.

The ramen used for this recipe is Samyang's Light Hot Chicken Ramen which contains 40% less spice (& calories!) than the original.

This recipe calls for the sauce packet and seasoning packet included with every pack of Samyang ramen. These are essential components of the air-fried Buldak fries as they transform your bowl of regular air-baked fries into something delicious with a hint of spice.

Want to heat things up? Substitute the Samyang Buldak Light for the Samyang Spicy x2 Nuclear Ramen available at Sukoshi Mart for a spicy experience. Caution, it’s extremely spicy!

Equipment

  • Air Fryer (or oven!)
  • Baking Sheet → Omit if your air fryer does not use a baking sheet.
  • Bowls (Assorted Sizes)
  • Parchment Paper → Used to line the baking sheet for easy cleanup. Omit if your air fryer does not use a baking sheet.
  • Tongs

What if I don’t have an airfryer? No worries. This delicious recipe can be baked in the oven as well! For crispy fries with a soft inside, place your baking sheet on the top oven rack when baking.

Helpful Tips

  • For fries with consistent texture and crisp, lay the fries in a single layer on the baking sheet. Spacing out the fries while air frying helps them cook faster and crunchier.

  • Adjust your cook time as needed – every air fryer works a little differently than the other. It is best practice to cook the fries until they’re golden brown or crisp along the edges.

  • For the best flavour, toss your fries with the buldak sauce while the fries are still fairly hot from the oven. The hot fries will absorb the buldak sauce better compared to cold fries. Be careful not to burn yourself.

  • For the best eating experience, consume the fries immediately after they are tossed with the buldak sauce and garnished.

Recipe: Air-Fried Samyang Buldak Fries

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cups Shoestring Fried Potatoes Fries (Frozen)
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 Packet Of Samyang Buldak Light (Sauce Packet & Seasoning Packet)
  • 2-3 Sheets Of Seasoned Seaweed
  • Japanese Mayonnaise
  • Salt To Taste

Directions:

  1. If necessary, preheat your air fryer to 415ºF.
  2. In a medium-sized bowl, toss the frozen fries with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Make sure the fries are evenly coated with olive oil. Season with salt to taste.
  3. Spread the coated fries evenly on a lined baking sheet for 10 minutes or until golden brown and crisp on the edges.
  4. While the fries are baking, prepare the buldak sauce in a medium-sized bowl. Set Aside.
  5. Take 2-3 sheets of seasoned seaweed and slice into thin pieces. Set Aside.
  6. Once the fries are ready, remove the fries from the oven and transfer them to the medium-sized bowl with buldak sauce. Toss well with tongs until combined.
  7. Transfer tossed fries into a clean bowl. Garnish with sliced seaweed and seasoning packet. Drizzle top with Japanese mayonnaise.
  8. Serve immediately and enjoy!

What about the leftover noodles?

This buldak fries recipe solely uses the sauce and seasoning packets that come with the ramen. If you’re not a fan of leftover food or ingredients, you can incorporate the ramen noodles into this recipe by air frying them as well! These air-fried noodles add an extra layer of crunch and texture to the fries.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. If necessary, preheat your air fryer to 415ºF.
  2. Break the uncooked noodles into bite-sized pieces with your hands. Once you are satisfied with the size, transfer the uncooked noodles to a baking sheet in a single layer.
  3. Air fry the noodles for roughly 5-7 minutes or until golden brown.
  4. Toss the noodles with buldak sauce and add to your fries.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Looking for a little bit more spice?

Dip these fries in Samyang Buldak x2 Nuclear Hot Chicken Sauce for an extra kick. Fair warning, it is extremely spicy!
